Ethical Sourcing of Dogfish Sharks

How We Source Responsibly

Commercial fishing boats along the East Coast primarily catch adult spiny dogfish for their meat, which is often served in restaurants. Unfortunately, baby dogfish are sometimes caught as bycatch—already deceased—and are typically discarded and sent to landfills. Instead of letting these specimens go to waste, our harvesters carefully save them for our business.

By repurposing bycatch in this way, we provide a sustainable alternative to waste while offering products that promote marine education and conservation awareness.

Working with NOAA for Sustainability

Our sourcing practices operate within the framework of a long-standing, highly regulated fishing industry. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) plays a critical role in overseeing and maintaining sustainable fisheries. NOAA:

Monitors Dogfish Populations: Regularly assesses the health of dogfish populations to ensure long-term sustainability.

Sets Fishing Quotas: Adjusts quotas for commercial fishers based on population levels, preventing overfishing and promoting ecosystem balance.

Enforces Strict Regulations: Ensures that the industry adheres to standards designed to protect marine life and support sustainable practices.

Through this collaboration, we ensure that our business aligns with the highest standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Why Ethical Sourcing Matters

Reduces Waste: By repurposing bycatch, we help minimize waste in the fishing industry. These Dogfish Sharks are immediately sent to landfills. We are committed to finding an education purpose for these sharks.

Supports Education: Our products inspire curiosity about marine life and foster greater understanding of the ocean’s ecosystems.

Promotes Sustainability: We ensure that every step of our process respects marine environments and contributes to conservation efforts.

When you choose Lil Sharks, you support a business that prioritizes ethical sourcing and sustainability. Together, we can protect our oceans, reduce waste, and inspire the next generation of marine conservationists.
